Starting Firefox and ALL my tabs are LOST and my home page was set to Google. How to restore my tabs?
The article didn't help: I selected Restore, and selected a backup date and..... NOTHING!
I STILL had none of my lost tabs, and the damn Google start page.
Could anyone suggest a way of recovering my lost tabs that WORKS??
(I've been using Firefox for 5 years, and this has never happened before.)

Before doing anything else, save all the sessionstore files to a safe location. More on that in a second.
However, please be aware: Firefox only saves them long enough to make them available until the next session. If you close Firefox without restoring — for example if Firefox is closed and the Flash installer shows a page saying you have the new Flash and you exit Firefox without restoring your earlier tabs — they usually are gone forever. If you want to save sessions longer, use an add-on like Session Manager to avoid losing them.
For now, open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Copy all files starting with the word sessionstore to a safe location such as your Documents folder.
Check the date and time on the files. Is any of them old enough to contain your old tabs? The answer leads to very different next steps.

By the way, in my first reply, I assumed you meant the windows and tabs you had open in your previous session. If the problem is that your Bookmarks Toolbar is blank, even after you restored a bookmark backup, that would be a different issue.
You can try to restore a previous version of the sessionstore.js file.
- Right-click: Properties > Previous Versions
- http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
- do not clear the Browsing History
- Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Clear+Recent+History
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.
Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.
