I can think of a few different explanations:
(1) Extra home tabs added to your home page. If you get the same unwanted tabs when you press Ctrl+n to launch a new window, this would be a likely explanation. You can check your home page(s) in the Options dialog. See: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings.
(2) Bad extension. You may have an unwanted extension that is opening these pages. Try this:
Disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a
- orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
(3) Hacked shortcut. Sometimes external software will add URLs into the program shortcut you use to start Firefox. If your right-click the shortcut, check Properties, Shortcut tab, then the Target line. On Windows XP, it should be nothing more than this:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
If anything follows that, try removing it.
(4) Restoring obsolete session -- only if you start up with your windows and tabs from last time. Sometimes the session data file gets locked and Firefox stops updating it correctly.
Are we getting warmer?
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
- Microsoft Safety Scanner
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
- Hitman Pro
- ESET Online Scanner
Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

You can try to delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Multiple_profile_files_created
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).
If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
