I think the most logical order of attack is:

(1) Clean system of malware per the link in the post by TheOldFox

(2) Disable or remove any unknown or nonessential extensions from the Add-ons page:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

(3) Update your newtab setting to the desired page as described by Nellus91. Here are some you could substitute for the URL you find, or use right-click > Reset on browser.new tab.url to go back to the 9 thumbnails of frequently used pages:

  • Page thumbnails (default) => about:newtab
  • Blank tab => about:blank
  • Built-in Firefox home page => about:home
  • Any other page => full URL to the page

(4) Check for and remove any user.js file that might override your change the next time you start Firefox. See: How to fix preferences that won't save
