I run windows XP i love it and im not looking to change. Up until the last "update" my Firefox worked fine no issues and rarely ever crashed. Since the update all Firefox seems to do is freeze and crash? not sure why nothing is different other than the update that was an automatic one. I have run malwarebytes scan i have done a deep scan with Kaspersky and also run tune up utilities just in case nothing was found i have no virus but what i do have is a non functioning Firefox. if i walk away from my computer for more then 10 minutes it freezes up i cant even minimize it and then it crashes.

I have looked through your forum i have inspected my plugins ( i dont have many ) nothing wrong there

Im not very tech savvy so please no long explanations with 300 steps because i wont understand it. i just want to be able to enjoy my Firefox again without it crashing multiple times a day.

Any help is much appreciated

nataliemac, you wrote yesterday,

i figured i had pretty much nothing to lose by resetting it so thats what i did :)
and since then i have not had it freeze up on me at all not even a little bit.
fingers crossed i hope i have fixed it :) if i have had no freezes by tomorrow night i will come back and mark as solved :)
resetting it has caused me other problems but no more freezing or crashing as yet lol

If the original problem (firefox is crashing over 4 times a day) is now solved, please don't forget to come back and mark the appropriate reply as solving it. (You can mark one of your own answers as the solution, if no one else actually suggested a Firefox reset.)

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that have a "bp-" prefix:

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.

  • You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website, or open the crash reports page via "Help > Troubleshooting Information".

Unfortunately the linked crash reports have a [@ EMPTY] signature and do not provide data that would make it possible to tell something about the cause of the crash.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

more options

not sure what that empty thing means or is it that there is actually no reason as to why its doing it that its just doing to it test my patience and my knowledge of the swear word??

i have done as you asked and unchecked the use hardware thingy

my browser crashed yet again ............................. :(

i am starting to create new swear words now

Take extreme care with editing the Registry. Many of you will have no need to even consider a registry edit. EDITS COULD PREVENT THE COMPUTER FROM WORKING. ~J99

if you are in xp and tried to use tuneup utilities which most of the time causes to block firefox from starting I had this problem recently

try to delete an entry in the registry navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

right click and remove SynAttackProtect

then restart your pc

My tuneup utilities runs perfect with my xp i have never had any trouble with any of my software running with firefox until the new update so what was in it? because since the new update my firefox laggs so badly and then crashes i havent installed anything new all i can say is there is something in that last update that has sent my firefox into a spin

i used to able to have firefox chrome and ie open all at the one time with my utorrent running as well if i wanted and now i cant even run my firefox on its own let alone with anything else so im wondering what is going on

Are you able to follow the links to your own crash reports?

Are you now getting crash reports that are not empty ?
if so please post the Crash IDs from any recent ones.

I note your plugins listing includes Conduit Plugin something many may consider none useful or even malware. That could indicate you were not always too careful with what was downloaded, and possibly you have other bundled software and even malware on your computer!

I think at this stage it would be worthwhile scanning with multiple up-to-date tools checking for malware problems.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

i have no malware on my computer i keep it very clean :) but i did run a scan just to make sure and i was right i have no malware I have Kaspersky which i would trust any day over something from microsoft :)

so no not malware

im just wondering why no one has yet said there is possibly something wrong with the update?? because i had zero issues before the update so unless you gave me malware that kaspersky malwarebytes and every scan i have at my disposal cant find then i would love some help that doesnt suggest its malware or my computer because its not

That is probably rather unlikely. The updates are released throttled initially to a portion of users so that any major problems will be picked up before everyone gets it.

It is also run through a staged procedure releasing as six weeks each in Nightly -> Aurora -> Beta versions. Although some code change will occur in that process. The Releases also must also pass automated testing.

Once the Release happens then we can look for problems showing up from: the crash reporter, the input feedback, telemetry, and comments on this forum.

Problems do and always will get through but it is unlikely a problems causing Firefox not to start would go unnoticed unless it only affected a vanishingly small proportion of users (nearly 1/2 Billion total),and then it would possibly be because of specific hardware or interactions with other software. Malware Presumably you installed the conduit plugin deliberately and like it. A simple web search suggests many users may be unhappy with that software. Search

It is suggested that you scan with multiple varied and up to date tools not just one as they tend to pick up different things.

I should possibly have also included a direct link to

im wondering what i have said to make you think my firefox wont start??

Also if needed, attempt to create a new profile, if the new profile works, you can transfer some files from the old one to the new one.

As a troubleshooting step It would be worth trying to start in Windows own safe mode (with networking) by pressing the F8 key whilst starting up and opting for Safe mode.

Then run Firefox in its own safe mode and with all plugins disabled and using the default theme.

If it does not crash we are making progress. If it does crash have you got a Crash ID for something other than an empty report.

Sorry my mistake.

My comments are however still to a large extent valid in that we hope it is not a Firefox problem causing your crash.

Rather than get rid of things Wakkas' suggestion of creating and using a new additional profile is a good idea.

In the new profile disable all the plugins run in safe mode and see if it crashes then. You probably expect a crash after two or three hours so it will not take too long to figure out if it has improved matters.

Note with Firefox profiles good practice is

  • Only create a profile in an empty folder, not in a folder with other content, and not nested within another folder.
  • Do not rename profiles (It is confusing, only the profile name changes not the profiles folder name)
  • Do not delete a profile. Only remove shortcuts to it. (if you make a mistake you are in danger of losing unrelated files.)

It is also worth trying Windows safe mode. Until we get a meaningful Crash report it is not really possible to find out what is happening.

you expect a crash after 3 hrs?? oh my lordy i have been blessed before then normally mine run for 15+ hrs straight never a hiccup i can run chrome as well as ie alongside firefox and utorrent downloading as well never ever an issue before lol

Depends on your hardware etc. as long as it gets fixed, make sure you are trying all the instructions here as you may miss something that may fix your problem.

This past week, since v23.0.1 update, FF has started crashing on me numerous times a day. This has never happened to me before, and I have FF open from 10am until 10pm every day. I've started using Chrome now, and I hate it. Here are my submitted crash reports

Hi Tricia,
Sorry you are having problems with frequent crashes.

Just looking at the first couple of your reports Trusteer Rapport could be involved. If you have that disable or uninstall it if an updated version is not available.

If you want alternative suggestions or need to discuss your own problem please start your own thread

  1. Use this special direct quick link
HERE { Only for these frequent crash issues)
  2. Remember to do your best and follow the prompts to include troubleshooting information.
  3. Please include crashIDs relating to Firefox used in Firefox's safemode
  4. Post back in this thread to confirm you have done that.

Hi John and thanks.

I updated Trusteer Rapport yesterday, so I'll see what happens today.

Can I ask what the point is of the crash reports being sent, if no-one gets back to the sender with advice, as you have now done?

Thanks again.

Tricia
