When in any web site but I will give ESPN F1 as an example it always shows four latest topics. When I click on to any of these up pops another two to four new web sites advertizing all sorts of junk I don't want to know about including very regularly asking if i want a USA green card. How can I stop this. I've tried deleting Firefox and reinstalling but get the same result.

I've been using Fire Fox for well over ten years now both at home and at work where there were no such problems when i retired some four months back.

Can you please help.

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware/malware on your pc. please go to firefox > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

Also have this nagging problem which has just started happening. Some of the junk is not easy to get rid of, promos and adverts. The answer above is beyond me, too techie- I'm sorry. Very new to Win 8 and where all your suggestions are. I have Firefox 26.0 not 4.0+. We only got this laptop late November and still learning having been a Mac fan for years and not it's gone and too expensive to buy, so we learning PC and Windows8. Been into Extensions and the list in there are all showing disabled.

With Firefox 4.0+ is meant all Firefox versions later than Firefox 4 and that includes the current Firefox 26.0 release.

You can do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Thanks. Have used Kasperksky as I have it. Done full scan and no threats.
