I keep getting prompted to update Firefox even though it is up to date
On my home System, I am [still] running Windows XP. When I go to "Help -> About", I get the message that my version of Firefox (22, I think) is up to date. However, periodically, I keep getting pop-up pages that are blank except for a small square in the middle that states that my browser is out of date and I should "click here" to download the current version. Is this malware? How can I stop this from happening? I have run a couple of anti malware programs that indicate that everything is "clean" but I *still* periodically get these annoying pop-up pages. [Specifically, I have used Malwarebytes Anti Malware and run the full scan and that is in addition to using Norton 360 which also "runs clean".] At the same time, nothing else appears to be affected and currently I just cancel these pages. Any ideas? Note that I went to the "about:configure" exercise to look at the "useragent" and there was nothing there to reset (the "reset option" was "greyed out"). PLEASE NOTE: THE "PROBLEM" HAPPENS ON A DIFFERENT WEB BROWSER FROM THE ONE WHERE I AM POSTING THE QUESTION!!! THANK YOU!!
Are you using Firefox ESR, or the firefox release channel. Your version says 17.0.7.
The "release" where I have the problem is NOT the on the same platform as where I posted this matter. The platform that I am using for this answer is a Laptop running Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) and THAT is the one showing 17.0.7... However, the one where I am having this problem is an OLDER laptop running Windows XP (32 Bit) - and THAT is the one which says "22" and indicates "up to date".....
Can you clarify what is "Firefox ESR" vs. the "firefox release channel"?
Firefox ESR = Security updates every 6 wks, full updates per 42 wks. Current version 17.0.7 Firefox Release = Updates every 6 wks. Current version 22.0
Thank you for the clarification... However, that does not explain why on my Windows XP, (where I am on version 22), I keep on getting these web window pages telling me that I "must" update Firefox....
Hello zvi1weiss, see if it is a user agent problem : Firefox is showing the wrong User Agent
Will check when I get home -- though I think I checked once and everything seemed correct...
Can you attach a screenshot of that update window?
Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.
I can try... The page in question pops up at irregular intervals.. However, if I can not capture the Browser Page, itself, I will try to capture the URL of that Page.
Mozilla doesn't use webpage "popups" to notify users that their Firefox installation needs to be updated. You are seeing a fake or malicious prompt.
Thank you -- I ran Malwarebytes anti malware but it did not detect anything -- nor did Norton 60... SO, if it IS "fake" -- I would like to know hwo to get rid of this....
If you have the URL of the page, you can report that URL via the fraud report web page. Mozilla is mainly interested in the misuse their Trademarks on "look alike" webpages.
Other reports about phishing or malicious URLs should be submitted here:
Have you looked through your browsing history for that webpage?
Well, I finally captured a screen shot of a page telling me that my Browser is out of date!.. I will attach the screen shot that I captured and maybe this will help somebody.... Oddly enough, this happened while I was accessing eBay...
Hello, the page is fake and vulnerable : http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/secure.oi-installer9.com
do a malware check, just in case...
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
- Microsoft Safety Scanner
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
- Hitman Pro
- ESET Online Scanner
Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Same thing has started happening to me. I have to close out and restart my computer. I have run Malware Bytes and my virus scan and nothing shows up.

I also ran Malware Bytes and nothing showed up... I finally just disregard the browser page that comes up... I have restarted by laptop -- but that is really not a workable solution for me...
