Firefox crashes on startup

Firefox version 20 crashes on startup. I get a crash reporter saying it had a problem and crashed.Clicking the restart firefox a few times allows it to start in safe mode and it works in that.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, keeping only bookmarks, etc, but it still fails on startup.

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I had been using Firefox a few hours earlier and it was OK, the problems started after I shut the computer down and IE 10 was automatically installed - I was up to that time using IE 8. Firefox was my default browser.

I have since installed Google Chrome and that works OK. I have not tried reverting Internet Explorer back to version 8 in case I end up loosing my bookmarks etc, which are required for work.

Any advice on this ?

The troubleshooting information was obtained while in safe mode.

Try to set the gfx.content.azure.enabled pref to false or if this didn't help disable Direct2D by setting the gfx.direct2d.disabled pref to true on the about:config page and leave hardware acceleration otherwise enabled.

You can also try to uninstall Windows update KB2670838 if you have this update.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

If the above doesn't solve the issue try this:

Open Firefox in Safe Mode (Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode) then disable hardware Acceleration turning off Hardware acceleration. Then start Firefox in normal mode and it should work fine.

Let us know if any of this helps!

Hello,

Setting gfx.content.azure.enabled pref to false had no effect - Firefox still crashed on startup.

However, setting gfx.direct2d.disabled pref to true cured the problem - Firefox now starts up OK.

What is the purpose of the above setting ?

Many thanks for the very quick reply and cure....

Nick.

I got the same problem its been there for several months now. Ive tried uninstalling everything and deleting all folders then reinstalling on several upgrades as time has gone on in the hope that it has been fixed but its still doing it. It tries to load then disappears from the screen in a flash. I don't have time to click on anything or set anything as its gone in a fraction of a second. Only the firefox application is doing this. I have my firewall switched off. I dont understand this as i have used firefox for years and it was allways reliable but now it wont even load.
