old icon keeps coming back while new icon goes away
down loaded new version of firefox.old version of firefox icon does not go away . screen is telling me only one firefox can be opened at one time . the wrong one stays while the newer one i just down loaded disappears

Did you follow instructions in Uninstall Firefox from your computer?
Once Firefox 3.6 is uninstalled, install Firefox 12 using How to download and install Firefox on Mac.
Note: Update also your plugin using http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/.
