Why has Firefox updated itself from 6 to 7 without me asking it to, when all I did was ask it to see if there were any updates available?

I clicked on 'Help', then 'About Firefox', then the 'Check for Updates' button. This started downloading the update to Firefox 7, without asking me, as all I wanted to do was see what was available, so I stopped it. The next time Firefox was opened, it went and downloaded and updated without asking if I wanted to do so. How do I undo the update for the moment, and how do I stop this happening?

Note that Firefox 6 will no longer be supported by Mozilla, and will not receive security updates.

For security reasons, firefox will not easily install an old version of firefox, but if you want to keep firefox 6 for testing, you can find the English Windows version at ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/6.0.2/win32/en-US/

To keep firefox from automatically updating:

  1. Go to Tools (you may have to press alt if you have the Orange Firefox Button enabled) --> Options
  2. Click the Advanced tab
  3. Click the Update tab
  4. Chose the option from the list that describes your intent.

Many thanks! Settings re-amended so that it asks first. I did set it to that previously, but it appears to have got switched off by mistake... I made the assumption it was still on.

Thanks for the link, will use it if it turns out I need to go back for one or 2 things. So far, no problems with my usual sites though.
