Hangs frequently - approx. every 15 minutes. Message says Firefox is Not Responding. Why???

This has been happening more frequently, approx every 15 minutes and may last from 30 sec. to 2 minutes. Message says Firefox is Not Responding. Sometimes I wait for it to come back; other times I close manually and reopen Firefox. Can this be corrected? I have returned to using IE.
