my firefox is an portable edition, but i don't think that has anything to do with it.

i have installed dozens of addons, and .xpi files install correctly. i have looked under the options/applications, but xml doesn't appear. (but the content types are not listed under, or even display the extention! (except avi and mp4 file) i thought maybe excell also uses xml but it is set to "always ask".

i have opera installed and it was previously set to be associated with xml and i set it back to be associated with firefox. under windows xp.

Where are you trying to download that search tool from?

from mozilla addons page obviously. not that that has anything to do with it.

(this case https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search-tools/)

I got it working but only after some tweaking that any normal user wouldn't think of. (in this case copying the files to the appropriate hidden (the user, not the installation dir) directory of firefox.

it's not exactly PLUG or PLAY! (like the .xpi files) why the xml extention? if firefox can't read the file when accociated with it? and why doesn't it automatically install?
