A few hours ago I installed the Firefox 3.6.14 update. Then a new Firefox window opened with the message "Required Firefox Update" and the Firefox logo. It asked me to install something from www.cuvce.com.

This add-on claims to add "colorful backgrounds" to my social networking sites. What's more it requires user registration. On what?? When I tried to close it, I got a pop-up window asking me "Are you sure you want to navigate away from this site? Click OK to continue, Cancel to remain." Since this is a typical message from scam sites, I got the hell out of there.

Is this add-on legitimate, and if so, why is it not being provided through the usual channels? To me it looks like your update has been corrupted somehow and this cuvce.com thing is a follow-on scam.

Please advise. Eric Regener

looks like a scam, sends on a loop impossible to close the window unless you click an a button

This happened to me too. I doubt that cuvce.com has any legitimate association with Firefox simply by the absence on ANY mention of them appearing in a Google search aside from this very topic! As far as getting out of the loop, I found that (in Windows) I could close the window and dialog easily from the applications tab of Task Manager.

BTW, they fake Google Chrome update, too, so it's even more suspicious. Just search 'cuvce' in Google and see 'Cuvce.com Ad faking 'Google Chrome Browser Update' Install...' link

Using the Task Manager closes all Firefox windows. To close the cuvce.com popup, go to Tools --> Options --> Content and disable Javascript. Now you can close the popup window without having to shut down Firefox. Re-enable Javascript after the popup is closed.
