When a click on a link which is a file I am always forced to save it to my computer before viewing it. Can't I just click on a link to open and view it without having to save it every time?

Firefox can only open certain file type directly, like HTML or plain text. In order for other file types to open within the browser, there must be a plug-in installed to handle that file type - like Adobe Reader for PDF files and Flash for flash files.

If a plug-in for the target file type is not installed, the browser has no way of opening or showing that file, so it must be downloaded to your computer to be opened by some other application.
