Cannot download GPS almanac files (current.alm) from NAVCEN. response from NAVCEN says:Greetings,

Thank you for contacting the USCG Navigation Center with this issue. We were able to duplicate your issue using Firefox version 3.6. Further testing using earlier versions of Firefox (3.5 and 3.0) and Internet Explorer encountered no issues downloading and saving the GPS almanac files. There are many reports of similar downloading issues from other sources on the Mozilla support forums with possible solutions to try so it appears to be a software/web browser issue and we recommend you try another browser or a different version of your current browser and see if that resolves the issue. That's an odd one. The site is not much help either. There is a list of plugins and/or viewers that they claim are used for documents on the site: http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=plugIns (the link is at the bottom right corner of the main page, "Download plug-ins"). Note that those saying "...Viewer 2003" are out of date; the current versions are "...Viewer 2007" and are available free on the Microsoft site: https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=&as_epq=site:microsoft.com+viewer+2007&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&as_sitesearch=&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=images

I tried to load into: Foxit Reader (substitute for Adobe Reader/Acrobat): No go Open Office Calc (substitute for MS Excel): had to parse into 2 columns of descriptive text and numbers PowerPoint Viewer 2007: no go ~~red:Microsoft Word: see attachment, bottom left of my post~~ I don't have Visio or Visio Viewer.

~~red:Is the Word image what you were expecting to see?~~

The file will not open in Firefox but will open the Word application and display the download there; save it from Word if you want to keep the file. When the screen opens to Open or Save file, choose Browse, browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office1# and click on winword.exe ; if you want it to handle all .alm files in Word in the future, check the box "Do this automatically for files like this from now on". Other Issues: ~~red:You have installed plug-ins with known security issues. You should update them immediately.~~

Update Java: your ver. 1.6.0.13; current ver. 1.6.0.20 (important security update 04-15-2010) (Firefox 3.6 and above requires Java 1.6.0.10 or higher; see: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Java-related+issues#Java_does_not_work_in_Firefox_3_6 ) (Windows users: Do the manual update; very easy.) ~~red:Check your version here~~: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ See: Updating Java Do the update with Firefox closed.
