Apps can read/change data, etc.

So, I've seen many apps that looked like they'd be helpful one way or another. (The latest was Malware Browser Guard.) When I click to install them, I'm warned that I'll be allowing the app to read what I enter, change things, etc. When I read more it sounds more reasonable -- it sounds like that at each step I'll be asked if I give permission for the app to read or edit -- the implication being read this specific page or edit this particular entry.

So by downloading these apps am I giving blanket authority to them to monitor my every click and keystroke or am I only telling the browser that I might want them to be able to do these things, but I need to be informed first when they are actively seeking to do something so I can decide whether to allow it at that point?

I don't suppose I have any guarantee that any software I use isn't collecting my userids, passwords, sites I visit, email I write, etc. -- but when I'm specifically warned I am authorizing a program to read what I enter, etc. it gives me pause. It's one thing to not know, another to say, no problem, have at it.

I'd like to take advantage of what some of these apps purport to provide. I'm hoping for some reassurance about downloading ones from presumably reputable companies.

Thanks.

Since that isn't a Firefox software and not part of the Firefox user help support side you need to contact the Addon/Apps developer and ask those questions to them. You have to agree to some form of TOS if you want to use their software if it's a legit Addon/Apps/Software there is no way around this any software you install you agreed to the "TOS" by default. You should best do some online home work for specific software you have concerns and ask the Developer those questions.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns about apps and their permissions. It's important to be cautious when granting permissions to any application, especially when it comes to accessing sensitive information.

When you download and install apps or extensions in Firefox, you are granting them certain permissions based on their functionality. These permissions can vary depending on the specific app or extension you are installing.

However, it's worth noting that Firefox has built-in security measures in place to protect your privacy and data. When an app or extension requests permission to read or modify data, it does not automatically mean it will have access to monitor every click or keystroke you make. In most cases, these permissions are more specific, allowing access to certain pages or entries.

Before granting permissions to an app or extension, it's always a good practice to review the permissions requested and understand why they are needed. Firefox will prompt you to confirm each permission request, giving you the opportunity to allow or deny access on a case-by-case basis.

While there is no guarantee that all software is completely secure, you can take steps to protect your privacy and security. It's advisable to only install apps and extensions from reputable sources, such as the official Firefox Add-ons website. These sources go through a review process to ensure they meet certain security and privacy standards.

If you have any doubts about the reputation or security of a specific app or extension, it's recommended to do some research, read reviews, and consider the track record of the company or developer behind it. This can help provide some reassurance before downloading and installing.

Remember, it's always important to be vigilant and cautious when granting permissions to any application, and to regularly review and manage your installed apps and extensions.

I hope this information helps! If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to ask.

Best regards, Suram Firefox Support Volunteer
