PDFs and "Open with Firefox"

more options

During a recent update, my download preferences automatically/mysteriously changed from "always ask" to "save file" in regards to opening online documents (most notably PDFs). No big deal: I was able to go and change it back to "always ask" for a few file types in the settings.

What I realized today, however, is that even though I'm still checking the "open with Firefox" option, the file is still downloading to my computers primary/permanent storage (in the downloads folder) instead of the cache that gets cleared upon restart (like it used to). At that point, I might as well have just hit the "save" button; I don't want to download the file, I just want to view it in Firefox then have it gone when I'm done.

Any ideas why this might be or how I might fix it? Thank you, Cole C.

Hi Cole, Firefox uses "Open in Firefox" to mean two different things:

(1) In the Applications list on the Settings page

Setting PDF to "Open in Firefox" opens it from the web content cache; it not saved to a normal disk folder.

(2) In the Download dialog

When you get this dialog, Firefox is already committed to save the file to disk. Before Firefox 98, if you chose "Open in [relevant application]", Firefox used the system Temp folder. Now starting in Firefox 98, Firefox uses the default download folder listed next to "Safe files to" on the Settings page instead of the Temp folder.

If you need to clean up some downloads that you don't want to save, you now can right-click that item on the Downloads list and choose Delete. This will leave a note that the file was moved or is missing, but that sometimes seems to take time to be reflected there. The URL remains in Download history in case you need it again, similarly to the old system.
