For the past week, I have not been able to download files using firefox any more. Other browsers (Chrome, Edge) work. Refresh did not change anything. Deleting profile did not change anything. Tried to uninstall, but got message "can't initialize plug-ins directory." I cannot get around the error message. I deleted the profile, but that did not fix the problem with downloading. I do not know what to do.

Thanks, cor-el. I did not follow these steps, because, on the 19th, I contacted Microsoft: the problem had begun spreading to other applications. They had me reset Windows, which wiped out all my programs. I was then able to install Firefox and everything worked fine again. The Microsoft tech posited that it was some kind of virus working its way through my apps and Firefox was just the first.

Now I cannot update Firefox any more. The error message is "can't initialize plug-ins directory." As of today, I now cannot play Netflix, because "Firefox is installing necessary components." but it is not installing them and Netflix is dead. I tried to go back to the Feb 10 Restore Point, which was only partially successful, but to no avail. I will have to leave Firefox and switch to Edge or Chrome if this cannot be fixed and, of course, I have no idea how to get help. Posting questions in "Support" seems useless.

Make sure you have the latest Widevine version (4.10.2391.0).

  • Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins

You can toggle DRM off/on to see if that makes Firefox (re)load DRM components.

You can possibly check the XHR requests in the Browser Console if this doesn't work.
