Like I mean there's not even a corresponding tab for it. Last tab is October 2020 and then nothing. It was there just a week ago and now it's gone. What's more importantly - with it gone all the browsing info older than October of the last year, and there were a lot of important data. Questions: a) Could it be restored, given that I didn't delete nor did I modify the places.sqlite file? I mean I'm not sure it keeps its revisions history, right? b) Any ideas why did it happen? (And how to prevent it from happening in the future) I mean it's not like there's no history older than six month, it's the entire tab missing completely, that's what puzzling me. I've tried to use tools which view FF history independently to double-check it's not just the browser and yep - there's nothing older than exactly current date minus half a year. Anything older than that is completely missing. On a side note, I really hope FF will implement browsing history export in HTML or TXT; Right now it's just bookmarks and it's a bit inconvenient.

FF version: 86.0.1 (64-bit)

Profile data can be removed or not recorded in several ways;

  • 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
  • 2) Privacy settings; (In the address bar, type about:preferences#privacy<enter>)
  • 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers
    Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.
  • 4) Mal-ware.

If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

If any errors are reported, check this link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional

The places.sqlite file contains your History and Bookmarks. And it looks like it is corrupted.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox. The browser should then create a new place.sqlite and recover your bookmarks from the backup files.

Note: Your history is not backed up and will be lost.

You can look at this NirSoft utility to inspect or backup history: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/browsing_history_view.html
