I would like to access FF modes such as Pocket but I don't trust Google and don't want to place requests thru Google Play

Google has proven over the years to be undependable and intrusive. Why would I confide my passwords or other personal info to it by selecting Firefox/Mozilla programs via GooglePlay? They handed over several million searches to Bush's Dept of Justice and they continue tracking people after they've signed off their Google account.

This is a public policy/political issue, not merely a request for a technical fix. I have a PC so Apple is not a mode that I can pursue.

Google Play is the official app store for Android (which is also a Google product, by the way), which is why the Pocket app is available to download from there.

Pocket doesn't appear to offer a direct APK download. You can find the APK to download from other third party sources, but be careful when doing that since not every third party APK website is trustworthy.

If you are really concerned about Google tracking you and stuff like that, I'm a little confused why you are using an Android device at all.

If you aren't looking to install the Pocket app on an Android device and just want to view it on your computer, you can use the web version of Pocket and just login/signup with your email instead of a Google account.

You can create one Google account [w/ a fake name & birthday] specifically to be used just to download & install apps. And you should not use it for Google searches, Gmail, YouTube or any other Google service if you really wish to avoid being tracked.

But Wesley's solution of using the web version of Pocket would be the least stressful since it avoids Google altogether. ;)
