Clicking links from other programs fails to launch Firefox

For some reason, even though FF is set to the default browser in windows 10, clicking links from other programs such as Skype, game launchers, etc fails to open the link in firefox. I get a momentary flash as if it is trying to pass the information along, but nothing happens. If firefox is not running, it does not launch. if it is running, it does not create a new tab or window. clicking links within firefox works as normal, and changing the default browser in windows to Edge or Chrome works normally with the programs. What's going on? Have already tried running FF in safe mode with addons and extensions disabled, this did not help. Restarted PC and checked for any FF updates, no luck.
