Firefox on Win 10 is causing long write times on SSD. Edge is the only browser that does not cause this. Any suggestions?

I've been a faithful Firefox user for years. Recently I was experiencing lag in on my PC, 45 - 65 seconds of nothing. The event viewer shows a 508 ESENT error indicating it might be faulty hardware.

taskhostw (8720,D,0) WebCacheLocal: A request to write to the file "C:\Users\mikid\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache\V01.log" at offset 28672 (0x0000000000007000) for 40960 (0x0000a000) bytes succeeded, but took an abnormally long time (65 seconds) to be serviced by the OS. This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem.

If I don't start Firefox, I never get this error and the system writes just fine. I've run troubleshooters on my SSD and it's all good.

Something about Firefox is causing Windows to lock up.

One thing that is puzzling about your experience is that Firefox has no reason to read/write files in the WebCache folder: as far as I know, it is the Internet Explorer cache folder.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any noticeable change?

Solved!

I updated my Malwarebytes def files. Malwarebytes insisted on installing a premium version.

I deleted Malwarebytes, several reboots later, all the issues are gone.

Thanks.
