Running Firefox 54.0 on Windows 10 on a desktop PC. I have several thousand bookmarks which I use regularly. For an unknown reason, over the past several days that has become problematic. When I try to open and use the bookmarks library Firefox stops working. I restarted it continually with no effect. So today I first ran Firefox in safety mode (no add-ons). That had no positive effect. Then I refreshed Firefox. And THAT has had no effect. When I try to open and use the bookmarks library (AFTER refreshing Firefox) Firefox just gives me the NOT RESPONDING message. I haven't added any new hardware or software recently other than the automatic Windows 10 updates.

I've previously investigated whether Mozilla admits that there is a ceiling on the number of bookmarks Firefox can handle without ceasing to function. This was some time ago. I remember seeing claims that there (at the time) was no limit on the workable number of bookmarks. Is this still true? Do Firefox bookmarks interact negatively with any NON-Mozilla programs or hardware? I use the bookmarks (and the bookmark library) constantly. I can prune the bookmarks but cannot seriously diminish their number. Any advice seriously appreciated.

Further (this is the OP adding to the above material), and more specifically, when the bookmarks library window comes up, even just clicking on the "All Bookmarks" listing on the left (to display the bookmarks) immediately prompts a "NOT RESPONDING" notice while the hourglass is showing. Then, without further action on my part, the upper action toolbar (the one at the top of the library page) starts flickering violently. After several seconds of that Firefox then by itself switches me to the online screen. While this is going on I have no input at all into what's happening. At no point does the library screen react. At no point does it display anything other than the "Other Bookmarks" screen which is always on it when it opens up.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

See also:

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
