I am using the latest version 53.0 of Firefox. I even UNINSTALLED FIREFOX and Re-Installed a brand new Firefox 53.0 , and have the same page freeze / hangup problem !!!

Never had a problem with Firefox for years now -- but as of the last 3 weeks, it keeps hanging up on random occasions , freezes a web page or site. I have to use Task manager (and there I see listed "FIREFOX NOT RESPONDING" ) to click on "END TASK" so as to be able to get out of the frozen page. I thus will loose certain things when Firefox returns. ie; usually the texts in composing a message board message, or composing an email

I have used FIREFOX SAFE MODE and it still freezes up.

When I run a Firefox TEST Mode thruout, I comes up with "Incompatibility Issue" but shows at right side of page a green check mark with word '"FIXED" - But it is NEVER fixed !!!

ALSO, I keep checking in SECURITY SECTION the box for REMEMBER LOGINS FOR SITES -- but every time I leave Firefox, or it closes, or it freezes up --- I have to go back and check that box or my logins do not shop up !

I have almost no extensions (other than Trend Mirco Anti Virus which never gave me problems with Firefox) and no plugins.

So I have tried many things that the support " stock" Q&A material suggests --- but still no fix.

I have seen on line that many people are having this problem. And can't seem to fix it either !

Here BELOW is a copy-paste of the "see the data" tech information for my system - if it may be of use;

Is this just with v53? Any problems before this?

Start your Computer in safe mode.

Then start Firefox.

Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

Hello Fred:

Thanks for your reply.

I am not sure WHEN I first updated to Mozilla 53.0 - but I seem to think it was done about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I did not have this problem, prior to early the end of March this (2017) year.

It is random and occasional --- but frequent enough to be very annoying. It has happened (freeze-up of a viewed page) once or twice when even running in Firefox Safe Mode format.

It seems more and more people are having this newest problem of Firefox hanging up. Even a new complete un-install of, and full new installation of, Firefox 53.0 yesterday, has not fixed the problem

I even had my on board (shares computer) paid (annual program) MSN Tech people try to check it out and they couldn't find anything -- tho they are not trained to troubleshoot Firefox or any other NON MSN-related programs, software.

When multi-process windows in Firefox is enabled then Firefox will use more memory and may be less responsive. Try to disable multi-process windows in Firefox to see if that has effect.

You can disable multi-process windows in Firefox by setting these prefs to false on the about:config page.

  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false
  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Hello Cor-el (Moderator)

I looked up and accessed the pages in the links (per about : support ) and saw that the MULTI-PROCESS WINDOWS is listed as DISABLED on the chart.

I can't find any way to modify or change (ie; any choices to make false or true, able or disable) any of the prefs -- ie: changing browser .tabs.remote.autostart from true to false (mine are listed as true)

While I am quite computer literate (I write HTML code to build websites) -- most Firefox customers/ users are absolutely in NO way tech literate nor would even know how to find, nor what to do with and to -- deep indepth program files to fix problems ...nor would they dare to attempt to so blindly.....

That's WHY I have an annual paid 24/7 tech support remote sharing access by Microsoft Technicians for my Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer systems on my Asus computer. THEY TROUBLE SHOOT and fix issues on my systems for me, (but NOT Firefox) because they are highly TRAINED TO. We Firefox users ARE NOT TRAINED TO, nor knowledgeable enough as trained techs, to fix deep Firefox issues !!

Anyway, I "auto-reset" Firefox to original defaults and will see how that works.

Thanks for your reply !

To get to what cor-el is telling you about, you put about:config in your location bar. You can then change preferences from there. You can then double click "browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2" to turn it to "false."

This will help some of your problem, but having gone through this myself I seriously doubt it will solve all of it.

Hello Firefox Fan1 - and MODERATOR

Thanks -- both of you ! OK --

I did the about:config --- I think I in error put a dot . instead of a colon : previously in that url -- anyway -- I did do it correctly and was able to change the ' browser.tabs.remote.autostart2 ' from TRUE to FALSE -- the other autostart line was already shown as FALSE. So I am waiting to see what happens...as far as any freeze-ups.

However, another issue still continues ---

I have to (and have had to for many weeks now) keep going to OPTIONS -- and then click SECURITY and on that section I must continually check-mark the box for REMEMBER LOGINS FOR SITES. It won't stay checked. Every time I close Firefox and come back in, I must perform that task FIRST before I am able to auto-log-in to my listed websites whose usernames and passwords are saved by Firefox. If I don't, I have to manually text-type to log into those websites

Any way to fix that nuisance issue ?

Thanks for all your help otherwise, guys !

Hello Guys

Again, thanks for trying with your support advice -- appreciated by me !

HOWEVER after spending about 45 minutes composing a lengthy technical text with photos on a forum board --- now AGAIN as many times before -- @!#$%^&* Firefox froze up on me, even in FIREFOX SAFE MODE -- and I had to go to Task Manager (showing Firefox NOT RESPONDING) and chose END TASK to release the page. Even after the many fixes I tried per your (collective) advice messages. Including a brand new fresh installation of Firefox 53.0 !!

Of Course, I then lost ALL TEXT and PHOTOS I composed on, and including itself, the actual composition page --- and had to start all over again. It froze up while I was loading a few photos from my computer image folders, to the website message board composition page. Never had this problem doing so on that and other websites previously using Firefox for 15 YEARS !!!

This hanging problem has happened so much over the past month - that OBVIOUSLY Firefox has become totally UNRELIABLE for any regular and interrupted working use.

What I do now is open Firefox, sign into a desired website, webpage, COPY the address bar url for the site, page, and I open GOOGLE CHROME BROWSER --- and paste that address over there and open the page, website, there, and do whatever I have to do (read, compose, edit, etc) over at Chrome. And I have NO PROBLEMS there (nor at Internet Explorer) as to what Firefox is causing me, described herein, over the past month.

Sorry, guys, but Firefox has become too large worldwide to handle growing issues - should not now expect the countless millions-masses of users (like me) -- most of them not at all computer literate or programs-tech-trained, -- to have to deal themselves with, and excessive time involved with, self-done "fixes" for and with this unreliable operational nonsense.

Even my Verizon ISP and MSN Windows 8.1 service both provide me "sharing-computer" annual-paid LIVE by PHONE tech support staff to fix issues like these -- perhaps Firefox should charge an annual fee to all users and have a hired tech staff to do so.

Sadly like many people I know on line, I will no longer be a regular user of Firefox, after always problem-free successful use of Firefox for 16 years with little to no problems. These present operational MAJOR issues are becoming a nightmare for me and obviously quite many other users.

I get at least a crash a day. I've done Firefox in safe mode and still get the hangs/crashes. It's only in both Firefox AND Windows safe mode that I don't. I've been dealing with something very similar and they suspect it's something with windows, but no one wants to give an idea as to what, because of course as long as it's not a direct problem with Firefox it's not really on their radar.

Do you have any Trend Micro software like its Password Manager? This software is known to cause issues with the remember password setting.

Hello Moderator Cor-el

Thanks !

I Have TREND MICRO Premium installed as my Antivirus software , but --NO -- I DO NOT have it monitoring my passwords -- I have reviewed the T.M. Security P.W. Manager page showing all the webpages, sites, etc., of which I have "user names and passwords" set up for, and have had displayed to me there, those user names & passwords. (ie: If I want to edit or remove them there))

Again, I HAVE NOT EVER activated the Password Security Manager program on Trend Micro, It is currently shown as NOT activated.

If you aren't using this Trend Micro component then best is to uninstall it via the Windows Control Panel. Security software has the habit to keep working in the background (its components can still be found by Firefox).

======================================

Hello Firefox Fan1

Some times when WINDOWS updates itself -- occasionally something gets screwed up somewhere -- and I call my MSN techs by phone to enter my computer (remote shared assist) - check it out, find it, and and fix it. I even showed many of those techs how I "fixed" WINDOWS PHOTO GALLERY image editing program when it frequently crashes --- I re-wrote the jpeg program file name, and then IT WORKS !! - MSN no longer supports the Photo Gallery service and it is not on Windows 10 - unlike being an onboard feature on all previous versions of Windows for decades !

Anyway, I am on Firefox now for a few hours and NO freeze up yet --- and can be on for a few hours AFTER a crash and task-manager release and return....and not suffer as crash when SOLELY just VIEWING websites and their contents.

As I now recall, in retrospect, Firefox seems to crash more often when I try to load photo jpegs as "Attachments" from my computer (photo folder files) on to a website, forum board, etc., , or even when I take images ("Save as") from another website or webpage to save to my computer in photo folders...

I won't completely abandon Firefox at this time, I "DO" like it - but now know WELL that for me to create or do any text composition, photo attachment-insertions, etc., on any Message Composition Pages on Forum Board and the like, or do anything that I will create and LOSE with a Firefox Freeze-up -- (and then have to start all over) -- I must use I.E. or more so, GOOGLE CHROME with no issues. Even YAHOO Browser works just as well at this point !

Thanks also for your issues and input !

Regards - Joe F

If you aren't using this Trend Micro component then best is to uninstall it via the Windows Control Panel. Security software has the habit to keep working in the background (its components can still be found by Firefox).
=========================

Hello again Cor-el

Thanks for the suggestion -- but again, the previous Firefox 52.0 and previous versions for years seemed to have worked well with my Trend Micro Anti Virus program with nothing deleted or removed from T.M. files - and I never had a Firefox freezeup issue either.

And it usually always remembered my user names & passwords even after I shut down the computer. All I had to do some times was type in the FIRST LETTER of any usename in an entry bar -- and the whole username showed up along with the encrypted (.....) passwords when I clicked onto that box -- resulting in a very quick sign in process.

After that, initial procedure, it worked fully without first entering the lst letter. And feature fully worked as such as long as I stayed on my computer.

NOW I have to go to OPTIONS, SECURITY -- and RE-CHECK "Remember Passwords for Sites" - and after that is done, it works, UNTIL I close Firefox again !

Per your (and appreciated) advice, I "hesitate" deleting anything from my Antivirus T.M. program files solely to "hopefully" (and probably not) fix this Firefox-only Issue.

regards - Joe F

There are add-ons that attempt to preserve the text you enter in blogs and web pages although they are not always fully reliable especially in multiple process Firefox. For instance:

You could of course resort to saving the content to a Word Processor, or even writing it in a Word Processor and pasting it in to the blog.

Have you tested Firefox in Windows Safe-Mode plus Firefox safe mode. If you have problems only in Windows none-safe mode then hopefully it is something that your MS support team will be able to troubleshoot for you.

There are potentially methods for obtaining useful info from hangs, but it is only normally worth considering attempting doing that in Firefox's safe-mode and with no plugins enabled.

If a plugin or an extension is involved it needs to be reported to the support team of the relevant additional software. In which case follow similar steps with just the problem plugin or extension enabled - but it may be simpler to try to avoid using the problem add-on.

I also am having this problem. In my case, I have Windows 7 and Norton installed. Mine freezes when I do something, like open a new tab, or click on a link in an email, or navigate to something new. I get "Firefox is not responding, and a blue sinning circle. If I wait 5 or 10 minutes, 'sometimes' the program responds. More often than not, I get impatient and try to close the Firefox window, and then at the moment I click the mouse, with the cursor on the close button, everything freezes: I cannot access the task window, escape, or anything. I can only hold down the on button to restart the computer.

It happens at odd times, usually at the end of the day, although it happened today within an hour of startup.

I am considering going back to an earlier version of Firefox until you guys can figure this out... Can I do this and what are the hazards to doing so? I have 45 stored on my desktop.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

So I have been paying close attention to this problem, and I still have it! About once a day. It is REALLY frustrating, and I am loosing work!

I have found that I have a program called "Event Viewer". Will this tell me what is causing this problem? How do I use it?

It is definitely related to opening new tabs, and it usually happens at the end of the day. It does not seem to matter if I have many tabs open, or just a few. Tonight I had 2 tabs open and when I asked for a third to look something up, Freeze. I have not had this happen with Chrome, but I HATE the idea of giving up FireFox!

I am using the latest version 53.0 of Firefox. I even UNINSTALLED FIREFOX and Re-Installed a brand new Firefox 53.0 , and have the same page freeze / hangup problem !!! Never had a problem with Firefox for years now -- but as of the last 3 weeks, it keeps hanging up on random occasions , freezes a web page or site. I have to use Task manager (and there I see listed "FIREFOX NOT RESPONDING" ) to click on "END TASK" so as to be able to get out of the frozen page. I thus will loose certain things when Firefox returns. ie; usually the texts in composing a message board message, or composing an email I have used FIREFOX SAFE MODE and it still freezes up. When I run a Firefox TEST Mode thruout, I comes up with "Incompatibility Issue" but shows at right side of page a green check mark with word '"FIXED" - But it is NEVER fixed !!! ALSO, I keep checking in SECURITY SECTION the box for REMEMBER LOGINS FOR SITES -- but every time I leave Firefox, or it closes, or it freezes up --- I have to go back and check that box or my logins do not shop up ! I have almost no extensions (other than Trend Mirco Anti Virus which never gave me problems with Firefox) and no plugins. So I have tried many things that the support " stock" Q&A material suggests --- but still no fix. I have seen on line that many people are having this problem. And can't seem to fix it either ! Here BELOW is a copy-paste of the "see the data" tech information for my system - if it may be of use;

HOPEFULLY some one can figure what is going on. Note; My MSN Tech Support does not troubleshoot Firefox, only Windows and Internet Explorer & MSN issues.

Thank you for any support and help, ideas, etc.
