As a workaround you can try to set the desktop shortcut to read-only via the properties.

Are you talking about te desktop shortcut, yes? What if you use the Firefox icon? Right-click and select Open new Window.

What is the bad start page? Ads, unwanted sites?

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Malware scan is finding issues so I'll resolve.

Quick fix of setting Short Cut to Read Only, good idea!

On a side note, this was caused by buying a GearBest WinPro PC for my TV. Windows kept coming up that it was not licensed. Contacted them and they sent me a program to run, fixed license key and injected this problem into Firefox. Love the PC but I'm upset that they would pull a stunt like this.

That was very good work. Well done. Please flag your last post as Solved Problem so others will know.

You can file a complaint with them. Very bad.

It’s very sad, but many of the software downloaders/installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well. You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print. You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does. From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.

Note that these programs can also change browser/computer settings

Unfortunately, there was only one install option. I trusted as it came from the manufacturer of the device. That will teach me.
