Recently starting up Firefox after an update to 46, the software acted as if I had never used it before and I had to 'log in'. My sync information has regressed back to a way it was years ago. My bookmarks are stale and new ones missing. I have two other computers I log into with firefox browsing. I'm afraid to check with those to see that they have crashed too.

Can someone explain what went down and why the browser has lost the most recent configuration I had been using?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

You can try to recover some data from a previously used profile.

  • check if there are multiple profiles in the default location used for profile
  • check if you have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop in case you have used the Refresh feature in Firefox and have created a new profile

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder. Location used for the main profile in "AppData\Roaming".

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files in "AppData\Local".

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
