Firefox kept stalling and crashing, so I refreshed it as suggested, and then discovered that all my bookmarks had gone. Unbelievable! No warning, or suggestion to back them up in some way! How would you feel, if your computer was playing up, and it suggested that you did something, and did not say that you needed to back-up anything first, and then you found that your hard-drive had been wiped! Get the picture! I have tried your suggestions for restoring my bookmarks, and it doesn't seem to work. I have Vista. My bookmarks were absolutely essential to me. I can't believe that when you told me to refresh Firefox, you didn't warn me that I would lose all my bookmarks. Please, please tell me I can get them back!

Your bookmarks are definitely supposed to carry over!

I assume you spotted the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop. During a refresh, your entire old settings folder is moved in there. So you should be able to restore a bookmark backup file from there. Here's how:

From inside Firefox, launch the Library window using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+b
  • "Show All Bookmarks"

On the toolbar area of the Library dialog, you should find an "Import and Backup" menu (it's the one with the yellow star with green arrows superimposed).

Here you can find Restore, and then "Choose File". Using Choose File, click to the Desktop, then into Old Firefox Data, then into your old semi-randomly-named settings folder, then into bookmarkbackups. Here you can try one or more files, you should be able to tell which is most recent from the file name (or if you display the Details view).

Please note: using Restore will replace any new bookmarks you might have added since "the incident". If you need to preserve existing bookmarks when doing a Restore, then add the optional steps on this list:

  1. (Optional) Export recently-added bookmarks: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks
  2. Restore your older backup as described above. See also: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
  3. (Optional) Import the recently-added bookmarks: Import Bookmarks from an HTML file
  4. (Optional) Reorganize the imported bookmarks into logical locations (they might be in an Imported Bookmarks folder on the menu or in Unsorted bookmarks)
