Firefox 33 rediculously slow on some websites

The problem I've been experiencing is, as usual, a peculiar one. Since I upgraded to Version 33, most websites work fine whilst others take several minutes to load, during which the browser freezes but not in the manner that indicates a crash; more like loading a page is so slow it backs up the whole application. I had this issue as well on earlier versions, but they were nowhere this severe.

Though I can't identify the cause because no crash report is created, I've identified the problem happening (so far) on the following sites:

http://www.hmv.com

http://www.play.com

http://www.gamestop.co.uk

Particularly in this Holiday season this is a problem, because if people can't use Firefox without it having a nervous breakdown, then there's something wrong with the version.

P.S.: I couldn't add Troubleshooting Information due to a bug with downloading the plugin (probably a broken link)

You can try to disable OMTC and leave hardware acceleration in Firefox enabled.

  • about:config page: layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You're a lifesaver; after loading all three websites with OMTC off, that is definitely where the problem originates.

Mozilla might want to look at why it affects sites like that, specifically.

You're welcome.

This can be a known issue.

  • bug 1089183 - Enabling OMTC slows down the entire browser
