If you use the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar then you can force a new tab by setting the browser.search.openintab pref to true.

  • about:config page: browser.search.openintab = true

You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

Do you mean opening links that you click on a website (Google results)?

You can set that in the Google Search Settings by clicking the gear icon on the Google results page. You can clear the Google cookies to reset all settings.

hello, this is a preference in your google search settings. go to google.com/preferences and disable the option to Open search results in a new browser window.
