Whenever I export a citation and abstract from a database, such as ScienceDirect, the record is saved automatically in downloads rather than in EndNote. How do I stop the automatic saving to download?

It's automatic. I don't think it can be shut down.
Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.
One thing you can do is to open the Downloads Manager <Control> J and remove those entries.
