I can't use about:config to put my tabs back down below where they belong

The latest (29 ?) version of Firefox compels me to have my tabs at the top of my Firefox window above the address (I'm sorry but I just refuse to call it the pigging 'awesome' bar - it's a dialogue box for chrissake)

I've tried toggling the setting in about:config - it no longer works.

Firefox is becoming the slowest of the three browsers on my computer - the others being Chrome, and Safari - It still stops more ads than the others, and looks more to my liking because I can customise it - only that's become so much less true

When Firefox was introduced, part of the aim as I saw it, was to put the user in charge of the user experience. It now seems to be turning into Son of Internet Explorer - the browser that does it their way, not yours.

Sort it out or I'm off

You can use any of the following add-ons.

If you don't want to install an add-on, put the following style in the userChrome.css file and restart Firefox. You can use the Stylish add-on instead, if you have it installed.

@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
/* The above line should appear only once in the file */

#TabsToolbar { -moz-box-ordinal-group: 99 !important }

You are right Firefox was and still is highly customisable. The recent policy change is that some of the customisations now need to be done with addons instead of being done from within Firefox itself.

You are also right in that you can not change the tabs from about:config so they are on the bottom.

I am not really aware of anywhere that Mozilla will welcome you and invite you to discuss this policy change with the developers and decision makers.

If you need help modifying Firefox post back and we will attempt to advise or suggest where you can gethelp.

If you wish to make your feelings known with a short comment please use the feedback option in Firefox or the link

I am given to understand summaries of aggregated comments are made available to developers and decision makers.

Some developers did spend a few days on the forum and answered a few questions but are no longer around. For more information and links to useful articles and other posts read the following general information.

Please see the linked articles. Be sure to use Feedback if you feel strongly, and also vote on this thread to say you have the same problem.

Firefox remains customisable. Maybe some of this information helps explain the improvements.

Try the new design, if it does not grow on you there are ways to make it more like the previous version.

Each setting you see in a computer program you use requires work; when a developer wants to build something new or improve something, he or she has to go through each related (hidden) setting and test if it still works like before and do that on each platform Firefox runs on. That's Apple's Mac OSX, various flavours of Linux and various flavours of Windows, including Windows XP. This costs time, lots of it, and that amount grows exponentially with each setting that's added. This comes on top of our work to continuously fix, improve and innovate Firefox.

That's why we also removed the tabs.onTop preference. Awesome community members, who were unhappy about that change, created the Classic Theme Restorer add-on. They deserve our collective hugs.

Are you having any particular problem ? We may be able to suggest a workaround.

Have your say. Note Firefox 29 is to some extent work in progress.

People helping here are mainly volunteers and users of Firefox like you and I. If you feel strongly about the new changes I would suggest you make a short comment and provide feedback on https://input.mozilla.org/feedback for the people who decided on the changes to actually see it.

Personally one of my major gripes is that the upgrade happens without prior warning of major changes, and then we are left in a changed Firefox trying to find out what works still.
Sure the new features can best be demonstrated from the new version, but some prior warning with a chance to read up about the changes would surely help.
