Thunderbird offers different release “channels” (update paths) so you can choose the development stage of the app that best fits your needs, whether you prefer stability, early access to features, or want to help shape development. Thunderbird Release channel (Default)

Best for: Users who want a Thunderbird that is stable and regularly updated

This channel receives updates every four weeks that include new features, improvements, bug fixes and security patches. So moving from one release to the next will be less disruptive than updating between major versions of ESR. This channel represents the best balance between new functionality and stability, so it is the default channel starting in 2025 and what most users should download and use. To change to this channel from ESR, see Thunderbird Release. Note: Release channel is not yet available for Microsoft Store (for Windows), Snap and Flatpak (Linux).

Thunderbird Extended Support Release channel (ESR)

Best for: Users or organizations that prioritize long-term stability over new features
Update frequency: Once per year (with occasional security updates)

The ESR channel of Thunderbird is ideal for users who prefer minimal changes to their software during most of the year. It receives important security updates but fewer feature changes over time. This is a great option for managed environments, like businesses or schools, where consistent behavior and low maintenance are key. Thunderbird Beta channel

Best for: Users who want to test upcoming features and help improve Thunderbird

Thunderbird Beta gives you early access to new features before they become part of the Thunderbird Release channel. It is more stable than Daily but still in active testing. Best for: Adventurous users who want the absolute latest and don’t mind risk

This is the cutting edge of Thunderbird development. The Daily channel is where new code lands first, and it can be unstable or break entirely.
