Firefox hangs when you use the File Open window

When using Firefox 3.6 on Windows Server 2008, Firefox hangs shortly (1-5 seconds) after opening the Windows Open File dialogue.

Sometimes the UI elements appear and are usable before it hangs, others times the window pops up but then it hangs immediately. It happens any time the "full" File Open window is used. It doesn't happen when using the "compact" file chooser version that opens which you click on the browse button for "Save files to" in preferences. In the compact one all resources are available and can be browsed without any errors.

I am having this problem across 6 (identically configured) servers. Strangely, no other applications except Firefox are affected, everything else can use the File Open window just fine.

I think probably this problem is unique to my environment or an extreme edge case, but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for troubleshooting. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox to no end, and now I'm kind of out of ideas.

Thanks,

This happens on two of our Server 2008 servers as well. I tried changing the shortcut properties from the default (Start In) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\" to C:\ and sometimes it will open, and sometimes it will not. This is on the 64-bit flavor. I don't have any 32-bit 2008 servers to test this on.

This also happens in FF 4.0 beta 7, FYI.

Thanks, Dave

I have the same problem but on Windows XP. I'm using windows XP through remote desktop.

"Open File" hangs but also exporting the bookmarks to a location on disk... whenever it tries to read something from disk (or networkdrive) it hangs.

I've just downgraded to firefox version 3.5.16 and now everything is working as expected again.

I am using XP pro sp2, no problems with Open File menu, or opening local files that are bookmarked or by entering URL directly.

Presumably you have looked at Basic troubleshooting & Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix and have tried from Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox

I've tried eveything and I only have the problem when the filebrowser needs to show up.

You presume correctly. It's only when I need to do a file-open or save. The initial window opens up but as soon as you try to start navigation, the hang occurs. I also have drives mapped on these two computers, so I wonder if that could be a possible cause...

Try to reset the browser.download prefs that show a directory on the about:config page.
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/about%3Aconfig

You can also try to clear the MRU list with the registry editor (regedit.exe).
Be careful if you edit the registry as there is no undo. You can export key(s) before making changes.

Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32
Delete the subkeys (LastVisitedMRU and OpenSaveMRU) (W7: LastVisitedPidlMRU en OpenSavePidlMRU)
