Why can't I stop firefox loading a page that is taking forever to load?

Sometimes when a page is taking forever to load I just want to stop it loading and go elsewhere. But clicking on X to stop loading does NOTHING - the page just keeps loading (or not loading as the case may be). Trying clicking on another bookmark doesn't stop it loading either. VERY FRUSTRATING - especially as slow or never ending loading of pages seems to be a 'feature' introduced by the quantum 'upgrade'.

Really thinking about junking Firefox and moving to a better browser (at this point I am just about convinced any alternative would be better).

Is this with many web pages, some, a few?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Since this isn't a problem that occurs all the time or consistently with any one site starting in safe mode and waiting to see if the same problem happens isn't really a good solution.

I do wonder if part of the issue is that I usually have a window with BC highway camera images open and those are updated periodically. I do notice if that window is updating it seems to freeze Firefox Quantum (or Fireforx (not responding) as I have now renamed it). Didn't notice this being such a big problem with the previous version of Firefox. Also with the previous version I wouldn't see the spinning wheel when clicking between PREVIOUSLY opened windows like I do with Firefox (not responding).

I opened the webpage and left it on. I watched my CPU. No problem. I even ran a video file converter. No problem.

Well Firefox is almost behaving itself today. But just tried to scroll down a page and got 'Not Responding'. Task manager showed CPU usage was below 10% and memory about 76%.

Probably because I am following the live cricket commentary on the BBC website at the moment http://www.bbc.com/sport/live/cricket/42930453. However I didn't have that open when I had all the problems previously.

Were there a lot of pictures, ads, players?

No more than caused NO problem with the pre-Quantum 'upgrade' of Firefox. I tend to look at pretty much the same pages most of the time and unless they changed something SIMULTANEOUSLY with the Quantum 'upgrade' I don't understand why Quantum is worse.
