When I was running an earlier version (37.8.1 I think) my Unread mails button suddenly stopped functioning. I click on it and nothing happens even though I have unread emails in my Inbox. I just updated to version 38.0.1 (the newest version). The problem remains. Is this a known bug and is there a fix? Thanks, Stringed

If course it is! I meant I had never dragged and dropped Quick Filter onto my Tbird toolbar from the Customize box. It had been hidden; parked there since I first installed Tbird. Obviously, you had implemented it so you must've assumed its on the toolbar by default. It's not, until the user selects it.

Does this read clearly to you as referring to the Button, not the Bar? I would take any unqualified reference to "Quick Filter" to refer to the object itself, not to an optional button to hide or reveal it.

Regardless of the absence or otherwise of the optional QF button, the QuickFilter Bar is accessible via the menu: View|Toolbars|QuickFilter Bar. So it is there to be found, if one looks for it.

But I say again; the QuickFilter Bar provoked anger from a significant number of users who didn't want it, and indeed stated that if they disabled it, it would return of its own volition. This is to me evidence that it appears automatically, with no intervention required by the user. BTW, many of those were CCleaner victims too.

I think it is clear that your "Unread" column in the thread list pane has never sorted nor filtered. So we are still struggling with your idiosyncratic recollection of it doing so. Now we point out the QuickFilter which is designed for what you want to do and you're arguing that somehow you had never seen this toolbar before, contrary to a background of users who complain that they cannot reliably remove it.

I don't know how to reconcile your singular experience with the large number of users who have found otherwise.

Since my remarks are continuing to be misread, I will thank the two contributors Matt and Zenos who assisted me in finding a solution and suggesting the possibility of an unrelated piece of monitoring software (which I have since uninstalled) as being a culprit in affecting the performance of QF'. I will also concede their use of arcane terminology has caused me to confuse them and maybe others. I seem to have muddied up the works.

All being said, I now have been given a solution that does what I needed it to do, so many thanks to you gentleman.

I spent some time testing a load of various versions and at no time has the column header (not a button) called unread worked nor was it included in the Sort by options.

I'm glad to hear that you have located one of the many options that do show the unread.

It is good to acknowledge any help and us volunteers offering free time and assistance appreciate it. Regards from the other person deliberately not mentioned.

I think you hit on the answer, Matt -- I have CCleaner installed on my HD. I had no idea how invasive such products can be. It's getting uninstalled as soon as I complete this msg. Thanks for mentioning this. It's the first real lead I have received!

I discuss how to modify CCLeaner here It is painless once you know how.

Wish I had known of the culprit lying in hiding inside CCleaner's setup before uninstalling it. If you know where to look, it's an easy fix.

Now I hope someday someone will address the script conflict between Firefox and Adobe Flash which causes the latter to freeze up nearly every web page and crash. I tried every solution out there. Drove me crazy. Finally had to stop using Firefox and migrate to Google-based Diglo. Any insights, Matt?

Not really, flash is such a rubbish thing and fixing it is really in the hands of Adobe unfortunately. I have had three flash updates in as many days.

I suggest you go to this page in Firefox and check the plugin you have is the most current. It can be quite illuminating as to just what plugins we actually have.
