Apparently Thunderbird updated itself to 128.9.1esr this afternoon when I restarted my computer. It is now completely useless, I can neither send nor receive email. It was fine this morning, when I presume I still had 128.9.0. My ISP is worse than useless, if you aren't using their lame webmail interface, you don't have a solvable problem. I downgraded back to 128.9.0 by following this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Thunderbird/comments/16jwt7a/%E2%84%B9_how_to_downgrade_from_thunderbird_115_to_102/ It retrieved email exactly once. I closed and reopened Thunderbird and it hasn't worked since. I've repeatedly deleted the compatibility.ini file. I tried updating to the current version and downgrading again and it isn't working. What do I try next?

TB is now opening a draft message upon double clicking, or right clicking an email to read, as I have for years, saying " This is a draft message " Running latest TB esr, Win 11, and have 2 accounts on the program, with only one account experiencing the issue.

May have something to do with saving a template on that account several days ago, but only a guess. I have deleted all of the templates/drafts, and the templates folder, restarted TB, and no change.
I am also getting a notice of "A unique matching id matching the From: address was not found. The message will be sent using the current From: field....."
Both problems have started as a set.
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue, I have compared all setting in the account settings folders, and all match. Need help.

Thanks, Steve

Hi, Having a problem with TB that started on April 9th. It stopped retrieving from my POP3 account that was transferred to Yahoo from Cox Communications 2 years ago. Our IMAP accounts have no problems. I CAN send emails, and the new messages do show on the web portal. My phone can also receive messages. on my PC TB tries for about 10 minutes to get the messages, then shows an error message "The DELE command did not succeed, error marking a message as deleted. Mail server pop.mail.yahoo.com responded too many requests". For a couple of weeks I found some messages never downloaded (most did) but now I get none. Interestingly today when it happened I would hear the audio announcement for the account there was mail, but none showed. Server settings are what is specified, tried restarting in Troubleshoot mode to no effect, and updated TB to next version. Still stuck. Any help is appreciated!

p.s. Just to complicate more, Windows did an update dated April 8, installed sometime on April 9.

p.p.s. Today I noticed the Inbox flag turned blue and the audio alert sounded, with the notification on the bottom left of the screen said "downloaded 110 of 110 messages, (slowly) but the messages are nowhere to be found. Hope this helps.

I am running Thunderbird on an older HP Probook with Debian 11 installed. On April 9 or 10 the machine did an OS performance and security update and after that Thunderbird will not open. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program to no avail. It will not open from Gnome or Terminal. I am not that technical but I know there is a way to fix this. Also I need to make sure my emails are not lost. Thank you, Jimmy Rone

I am an experienced TB user, but at the moment at a total loss for a solution to my problem.

I use Windows 11 Pro. When trying to click on image attachments for PNG and JPG/JPEG pictures, the behaviour is different: PNG images are displayed just fine in the Windows photo viewer, JPEG images are not. If I open the same images via double-click from the local disk, both open just fine in the same viewer. I have checked the file type settings already and even changed them to always ask me for JPEG images. I get asked just fine and see that TB wants to open the Windows photo viewer for both files types, but while it works for PNG, it does not for JPEG. There is no error message, just nothing happens, at least nothing visible to me.

When trying the same from a new user profile, it works as expected. I tried TB safe mode, deactivating all add-ons, but it still does not work in my main user profile.

I would be glad to receive hints for how to solve or at least debug this. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have what appears to be a common issue, but the common solutions I found don't seem to help.

I migrated to a new Mac[1], and my Thunderbird[2] on Mac times out while sending messages through the SMTP outlook server. So I am unable to send emails from account. By migrating, I mean I copied over my entire ~/Library/Thunderbird and used that. It actually did work for a few days. But then it started failing.

There are some common suggestions on the internet for how to fix this, and I have tried them all:

  • make sure correct settings are used. I am using Outgoing SMTP Server: smtp.office365.com, port: 587, security: STARTTLS, authentication: OAuth2.
  • make sure Firewall is disabled
  • restart Thunderbird
  • restart Mac
  • delete Thunderbird folder in Library, and just start over with a new profile.
  • change Thunderbird time out setting

The error I get, after about 15 seconds is: "Send Message Error. Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to the Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.office365.com timed out. Try again."

I have no problem receiving email, but am unable to send.

I tried gomtp to look at what was happening, but I wasn't sure how to configure the ssl, tls, auth settings and how to specify where to find the password.

A number of email providers (godaddy most recently) have begun quarantining emails that contain HTML attachments.

This is rendering the Thunderbird Filelink (we're using dropbox) increasingly unusable without the option to DISABLE the .html attachments and just have the file links contained in the body of the email.

Would TRULY appreciate any help with disabling the Filelink .html attachments or having that switch added in the preferences.

Many thanks!

Hello,

I need some advice on my Thunderbird email system. The problem(s) that I’m having are what’s frequently discussed with regard to Tbird “gulping” system drive storage, without frequent release.

I have been reading most of the narratives from this complaint, but the problem I’m having seems a lot different. So, I came here to explain my observation(s), in hopes I could correct this issue.

1. I am a long term Thunderbird POP3 user, since before the failures began related to signon security changes, before the Tbird corrections were employed(figuratively rewritten). I left Tbird during that time, and now I’m back. 2. So, like many others, my problem(s) arise from Tbird’s apparent failure to relinquish storage areas, when unused. 3. Right now, My W10 system drive(SSD) is setting at sitting at 122G. 4. It should be <100G, and it’s been as high as 13xG. 5. But, through some magic, something seems to happen during a inactive period, that will magically trip this storage to a more reasonable value. I have seen this 122G drop to 102G, but not in a very long time. 6. Beyond the fact that I’m stumped, I chose to write this narrative because my operations/experiences are significantly different from others I’ve read. 7. First, this is the only problem that I’m having with Tbird. Everything that I perform operates flawlessly. 8. And, probably even more noteworthy, is that I never maintain ANY email data inside Tbird. Barring absence, as soon as I determine email arrival, or any email changes, I simply move that email to a system repository for archival. As soon as this archival is complete, the email is deleted from it’s point of arrival. So, IOW, every time I close this system, Tbird will be completely empty of current mail. 9. Additionally, I initially configured ALL email storage repository to reside on another system removable drive. 10. Prior to this note, I issued the compact request. I did see a 3.0MB, but I’ve never seen anything above 0 MB before. 11. Additional attempts as solving this storage release problem, has warranted my purchase of a software product that will allow me to “look” into the internal storage of Tbird and several competitors, to send this hidden data to other repositories. It’s a long story, but I needed the product to migrate email data, where only Print PDF was avail- able. 12. But, it’s been very helpful in identifying Tbird internal email data that remains, despite the fact that I’d cleaned Tbird of everthing prior to my last review. 13. And, another issue is that all the email data that external email tool identifies, is deeply hidden from my standard Tbird client. The email data may be several/many days old, even though the related viewable email data had been archived/deleted several days earlier. 14. I mentioned that I have my email data re-positioned(#8) to external system repository drive for archival. This specification is issued in the “Local Directory” definition defined within each email target definition. From my long past experie- nces with Tbird, I learned that I could enter each of these “Local Directory” alternate repositories, and just simply erase them of ALL email data. 15. And, the next time Tbird was initialized, those “Local Directory” repositories would be rebuilt, clean. This will remove all email characteristics formerly present. And, the remote repositories(#11) will be built clean, and no latent email data will remain. However, this is probably unavailable for the 99.99% of users that maintain email on/in the Tbird system. 16. Tbird does, at some time, reorganize these repositories to regain wasted drive space. I don’t know/understand just what triggers this reorganization, and it never seems to “sync” the complete unused storage available. Right now, my system drive(SSD) was up to 122GB. Some time during my research, I noticed a drop to 111GB. But, if all empty data was reorganized, it would be <100GB. Of course, when I describe these system drive totals, I’m referencing the high limit of storage, including ALL installed software. (#5). 17. The software product that I installed, to be used to move email data from an email client to a stationary repository, is known as “YOTA Email Migrator” – A product of by YOTA Software Inc. https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=yota+email+migrator&atb=v415-1&ia=web 18. I’m very sorry for my extensive narrative, but this is complicated, and complication needs words.

Thank you,

Gary Walker -

Is there a setting, or a toolbar button that can change the View As setting?

Hi I've been using TB for years & have had this issue on & off for a while, but it seems to be getting more frequent/annoying

When I move emails from my inbox (unified inbox) to the various local folders that I've set up, sometimes they move just fine & other times I have to shut TB & re-open it. Usually this is only occasionally, but this morning I could only move about 6 emails before I had to restart TB. All very tedious!

My inbox had got a bit full - circa 250 messages & I was moving to a folder that did have quite a few messages - I think it was about 14,000. I have now moved some of them to another sub folder, which is sort of OK, but a bit of a pain when searching for an email from last year as I now have to go to a different folder to look. I generally keep this year & the past year in my main folder & then put the previous year into a dated folder. I've now moved all 2024 emails to a different folder.

This happens on various sub folders that I've got - often they have circa 12-15,000 emails in

Any ideas?

I do have compact all folders when it will save over 1MB in total set up, so all folders are regularly compacted

Thanks
