Why do some of the small icons in my Bookmarks go blank leaving just a dotted square instead of the usual colored emblem of the org/site?

I have approx. 30 bookmarks displayed in my vertical Bookmarks toolbar. Recently the the small pictorial icons next to the names of 6 of these sites have changed to small blank dotted line squares. Why is this and how can I restore the site emblems?
