Why can't I download PDF files from SSRN in Firefox 4?

I used the SSRN 1-click download feature with Firefox 4 and the latest version of Adobe Reader, and the resulting PDF download (an academic paper) was damaged and un-openable. The same thing occurred without Adobe set as the default. I think that this is a Firefox issue, and would appreciate a few suggestions that don't involve using Safari (prone to malware) or Google Chrome (likely to collect unwanted personal info). Thanks!

My problem is slightly different: when I click on the 1-click-download button in SSRN (www.ssrn.com) the page shortly shows download locations then reloads and I am left with the 1-click-download button again. That's frustrating!
