Loading Thunderbird onto my new Chromebook

I have a new Chromebook, having previously used a Microsoft Surface Pro. I have loaded Linux onto my Chromebook and now have installed Firefox and Thunderbird but I can't get my email account loaded onto Thunderbird. I receive a message as follows: "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration" I'm sure that I have entered the correct details. I was offered the chance to scan a QR code but that option doesn't seem to be there anymore. (The Chromebook doesn't have a front camera but it will lie flat so I was going to be able to use it)
