Last time I heard of this, it was trend antivirus or was it alvira or another antivirus, that offers some sort of scam spam protection and basically did not work correctly with Thunderbird after an update an was not polite enough to just stop messing everything up.

Have you tried restarting Thunderbird in troubleshooting mode from the help menu?
