Very annoyingly, (Portable) Firefox (60.0.2) on up-to-date Windows 10 desktop refuses to recognize my PC so I have to keep getting a code and re-signing in.

I am on a portable version (60.0.2) of Firefox on a Windows 10 64 desktop. Although this worked fine for a long time, now every time I go to Firefox have to log on again, including the two-step security code thing. Then it asks if I want it to "save" the browser so I don't have to do this again, but it never works. I am not sure if this started after the recent Windows update or the Firefox update, but it is annoying to the extent that I may drop the two-step security process.

Thank you, Pkshadow. But the fact is I have used Firefox as a portable for probably 15 and it generally works marvelously. I think the problem boils down to cookies somehow not being saved correctly. Since thinking about this from this morning, I deleted the Facebook entry here: Tools/Options/Privacy & Security/Cookies & Site Data/Manage Data and since then everything seems to work.

Maybe it is solved, maybe not. But for now I am hopeful.

Thanks again.

First, Firefox Portable isn't an official Mozilla product, it is made by Portable Apps and they have an agreement with Mozilla to be able to use the Firefox "branding" (the name, logos, and such).

Second, as far as "signing into Firefox" there isn't a log in required to use Firefox. Optional is the Master Password feature, but you may be referring to using a Firefox Account (FxA). If you are asked to log in to your FxA every time, my guess is that your physical location has changed since the last time your used Firefox and that is what triggers the "two-step security code thing every time".

Is that correct?

If so, that may be related to Firefox Portable, and if so you should visit their support forum here: http://portableapps.com/forums/support/firefox_portable -- I am not currently using Firefox Portable, and never used Sync with a FxA with "Portable" so I can't help you with that.

As far as turning off the "two-step security code", I'm not sure if that is even possible. Never ran into the "two step" as both my devices that have connected to Sync (with a FxA) are stationary so the location never changes. So basically that only affects Laptops and other mobile devices.

Also, don't clear cookies between Firefox sessions! I don't know how Portable Firefox handles cookies by default, but:

  • Don't use private browsing with sites you want to remember you (for example, do not use Firefox will: Never remember history)
  • Don't set all cookies to expire when you close Firefox (or if you do, create exceptions for sites whose cookies you want to retain)
  • Don't set Firefox to clear history when you close the program (or if you do use that setting, uncheck Cookies so they are not cleared)

These can be found on the Options page, Privacy & Security panel.

Thanks. My bad. I left out the part where it is signing into Facebook that is the problem. When I sign in, Firefox is not saving something that allows Facebook to recognize the browser. That is where I have the two-step sign in process. There is something about Firefox that apparently changes all the time or at least does not register properly so that Facebook recognizes it. This has worked properly for years with the portable version, and has only recently been broken.

I have it set to save cookies but that does not help. Nothing is set to expire.

Thanks again and sorry for my lack of clarity. Chalk it up to age.

Update. The more I think about it, the more I suspect that it may be a Facebook problem. I just checked the cookies settings in Firefox, and while it is set to accept Facebook cookies, none are listed, whereas there are listings of cookies for other sites. I suspect that somewhere along the line Facebook is failing to send the cookie, perhaps as a change in their new security policies.

Hi, Portable Apps are doing what they are suppose to do by not saving as much data.
