iCloud authentication issues on mobile

Alex

I recently set up Thunderbird on my android phone and managed to finally connect my iCloud email to both mobile and desktop (didn't realize i needed two different passwords for each).

After a few weeks of it working fine, I'm now being notified of some authentication issue for mobile. Does this mean I have to re-do the app specific password again? Will this be a consistent thing I would have to do for my iCloud? Don't need to do this for any other email I have set up through the mobile app.

Anyone know of a solution for this? I'd hate to continuously need to revoke and create a new password for just this email address.

It would be helpful to include what the authentication error message said, otherwise it's just guess work. It may have been a temporary network or server issue.

Navigate to settings > account name > fetching mail > incoming server. Tap next.

If the step doesn't show any error messages then no further action is needed.

Error: Authentication Failed.

That's the message.

I'm trying to understand if the authentication issue was a temporary failure, or permanent? Is the error message displayed after performing the steps I suggested?

There should not be a need to keep changing passwords.

So the authentication failure is coming from outgoing mail servers.

I've tried both STARTTLS and SSL/TLS and they both fail.

I'm still getting incoming mail without a problem.

Based on the information on https://support.apple.com/en-us/102525

Server = smtp.mail.me.com Security = StartTLS Port = 587 Authentication = normal password Username = your full email address Password = Same app specific password you used on the incoming settings page.

StartTLS is the correct security type for port 587
