Spam folder doesn't show it contains messages until I select the folder.
I've turned off all spam detection to the best of my ability, but sometimes messages end up in the Spam folder. Unfortunately, the folder looks empty until I actually select it. As a consequence, legitimate messages have languished there for days until I remember to click on the Spam folder.
Anything I can do to fix this?

Yep. you need to right click the folder, select properties and include the folder when getting mail.
just an FYI neither spam/Junk not trash/deleted are included by default.
