Thanks for that. Unfortunately, Thunderbird freezes, so I can't use the repair tool… I've now tried deleting the msf files and watched it rebuild the file, but as soon as I enter the password for one account, it freezes again. I have one account for which I manually enter the password. Thunderbird opens and sits at that entry box, and I can see t updating and hear it download new messages from other accounts, but it remains locked to that password entry screen. As soon as I enter the password, it starts the spinning disk and stops responding.

What does the "Error Console" say? Tools > Developer Tools > Error Console or ⬆︎⌘ J

Unfortunately, I can't access the Tools menu. It only shows the dropdown "Thunderbird" menu after start up (it locks me into "Enter your password for …", and once I enter it (or don't by entering "cancel") it freezes.

Can you close the password entry box before TB freezes? So that you may use the menus such as "Tools"?

Just tried. When I close the window, I can get the dropdown menu to open, but then it freezes… (Force Quit shows it as "(not responding)").

I've deleted the .msf files to get it to rebuild in case that was the problem (for imap accounts), and let it run overnight without entering the password to that one POP account, and it rebuilds them just fine, and I can hear the chime as new messages are coming in for those other accounts. But then it hangs when I do anything to close the password entry or enter the password for the problem POP account.

It makes me suspect the problem is with that one account, and I wonder if I can delete it from the Profile/##name##/Mail/ folder or something like that. I can recover the information from that account, and I have it all backed up, so I really just need to figure out why it freezes.

Please try again but this time don't enter the password but just close the box. If TB stays alive you might get to Tools > Developer Tools > Error Console ...?

It makes me suspect the problem is with that one account, and I wonder if I can delete it from the Profile/##name##/Mail/ folder or something like that. I can recover the information from that account, and I have it all backed up, so I really just need to figure out why it freezes.

Yes, delete the problematic POP account, at least temporarily, but don't fiddle around in the profile folder! Go to Account Settings > problematic account > Delete (see image) When the "Remove account and data" box opens, don't check "remove message data" This way your account information will be removed but TB will conserve your message data! (see image)

Anyhow, if removing the POP account doesn't fix your TB freezing problem you should test TB in a new profile. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-thunderbird-profiles#w_start-the-profile-manager-when-thunderbird-is-closed

Okay, it worked fine when I opened the Error Console and I could access everything. I deleted the problem account, but upon restart, it hangs again…

This is the error message I can get from the Error Console before it hangs:

I can create a new profile as you suggested and re-access some accounts. It looks like it may be an Owl issue? One (newish) account requires Owl, which I already have for a different account. I wonder if it's hanging due to new restrictions on that server.

I am not familiar with the Owl for Exchange add-on. Also in your error console report I've seen that you use some add-ons I never tested.

I asked you to test TB in a new, virgin profile in the first place to know whether your problem lies in the profile or if it may be caused by a new bug. A new profile doesn't modify your message data in the actuel profile, it is completely independent of the actual profile. If TB runs in the new profile without slowness or freezing we know that the unknown cause of must be in your old profile, and you should continue testing by creating one or more of your usual email accounts (pop & imap)

Sorry, I phrased that poorly. I created a new profile, and that works fine and TB is functioning normally. (I had to use Owl to access the email account I used to set up the new profile).

So the issue is in my old profile.

Now, with a new profile running smoothly, you'll have to transfer certain data from the old to the new profile. If you have IMAP accounts set them up again with your existing email addresses, they will immediately synchronised with the servers. If you used the POP protocol for other email addresses you must set them up, but the retrieval of the messages stored locally in the old profile will need a special manipulation which I will explain if necessary. The same manipulation will be necessary if you used the Local Folders for storing messages. in the old profile

I've done the first two steps and only have the transfer of the Local Folders left to do. Could you explain that? Is it as simple as copying Mail/Local Folders from the profile? (some older posts have suggested that)

Thunderbird closed , copy "Local Folders" in "Mail" of the old profile and replace Local folders in Mail of the new profile with the copy. That's all for your messages if you didn't have POP accounts in the old profile. Do you need help for your Thunderbird address books or filters or whatever?
