This is a new feature implemented by https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=308148 and https://bug98304.bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1320832 with mail.imap.filter_on_new is true by default

Set it to false to disable this fature

David :Bienvenu - Comment 1 • 12 years ago This is by design - we don't filter read messages. I understand that you want us to, but if we did, people would file bugs saying you shouldn't filter read messages :-)
