When I "bookmark" a site, and "place" it in an alphabetical folder, I can never find it again. How should I bookmark for retrieval?????

I have neat little files set up for my bookmarks, but when I think I am correctly finding a bookmark for later retrieval, it is not there. This is the only browser with which I have had this problem. Clearly I am doing something wrong. How "should " I place potential bookmarks in my folders and be able to find them later?

How are you creating the bookmarks?

Within Firefox, when you bookmark a page (for example, by pressing Ctrl+d), it is added to a database that is only used by Firefox and not other browsers. A panel displays briefly to allow you to select a folder. By default, the new bookmark is added at the end of the folder. Is it not working that way for you?

Note: Since Firefox 40, some versions of the "IE Tab" extension block saving of new bookmarks. If you use any of those, you may need to disable/remove, update or replace it.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync while performing maintenance/repair efforts to files in the Firefox profile folder.

Where are you looking at your saved bookmarks?

  1. Star / Clipboard dual button on the Navigation Toolbar
  2. Library Window
  3. Bookmarks SIdebar
  4. or are you using an extension that modifies "Bookmarks" views

I view my bookmarks in the Bookmarks Sidebar by using {Ctrl + B} and then use the Search filed at the top. Works for me!

As far as saving a new bookmark; I do that via the Bookmarks Sidebar, by dragging the tab into the folder I want the new bookmark saved in.

Been doing it like that since 2002 when I was transitioning from Internet Explorer to Firefox (known as Phoenix in 2002).

As far as doing things the way the Firefox developers intended, you should look into the Tags feature for Bookmarks. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/categorizing-bookmarks-make-them-easy-to-find That might make it easier to find a saved bookmark. I could never 'wrap by brain around' the Tags concept when it was introduced in Firefox 3.0 back in 2008. I guess I am set in my way of doing things.
