I am using Gmail, and when trying to send an outbound email with images as attachment, it gave an error message saying that the message is saved, but a copy was not placed in your sent folder (sent mail) due to network or file access errors.

Given google place a copy as the mail leaves their servers, I suggest you just disable Thunderbird's copy in account settings.
