After starting in Safe Mode all my bookmarks disappeared. I followed your 0directions to recover them but they only returned to the Bookmark tab on the toolbar. My sidebar now has the pages that I searched in Mozilla Help and none of my bookmarks.

You did open the bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+B) and not the history sidebar (Ctrl+H)?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.
