So emails filtered into folder B need to have a means of selecting older emails and moving them to another folder.
Options depending upon where you want the older folder B emails to go:
If you want to delete them off computer and any copies kept on server: Set up a Folder B Retention Policy.
- Right click on folder B and select 'Properties'
- click on 'Retention Policy' tab
- uncheck 'Use my account Settings'
- choose an option eg:
- Select: 'Delete messages more than eg: 30 days old'.
- click on 'OK'
If you want to Archive the emails - these emails will be still be available via Thunderbird under the 'Archives' folder. Set up Archive options: 'Tools' > 'Account Settings' > 'Copies & folders' for the pop mail account or right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select: 'Settings' then select 'Copies & folders' for the pop mail account.
under 'Message Archives' section
- select: 'Keep message archives in'
- Select: 'Archives folder on' mail account name
- click on 'Archive Options' button
Depending upon how many emails you get select one of the following:
- If a lot of emails select; 'monthly archived folders'
- If a reasonable amount but not loads, then select: 'Yearly archived folders'
If you want to keep the existing folder structure:
- select: 'Keep exisiting folder structure of archived messages'
Example, if you archive 'Sent' messages, you may want to have them separated in the Archive folder, showing in a 'Sent' folder. Archiving is very useful for moving all older mail from any folder so that you have more space in the original folder.
- click on 'OK
- click on 'OK' to close and save Account Settings.
How to Archive:
- click on Folder B
- Sort by Date and unthreaded
- Highlight a selection of older mail - click on first one, hold down 'shift' and click on last one - this will highlight all emails in between and display them as 'conversations' in the lower Message Pane.
- Click on the 'Archive' button.
Note: if you select any email or batch of emails and press 'A' - it will Archive those emails. 'A' key is the keyboard shortcut for archiving selected messages.
Manually run a filter on Folder B. Tools > Message filters
- click on 'New'
- give filter a suitable name
- Apply filter when - only select: 'Manually run'
- select 'Match all the following'
Use conditions/rules eg:
- 'Age in Days' and 'Is greater than' and select a number eg; 30
Perform this action
- 'Move message to' and select the folder on the mail account or Local Folders.
- click on OK
- then enable that filter and disable other filters
- select: 'Run selected filters on 'Folder B' in mail account.
- click on 'Run now' to run that filter on only Folder B.
I've offered a few options for you to consider. Personally, I would use the 'Archives' option, but it depends upon what you are trying to achieve.
