I empty the trash, but then it keeps coming back. 63,000 old emails! I have deleted and reinstalled thunderbird several times but the problem is still there. I tried troubleshooting but the first thing it says is to go to the profile folder. I must be a moron but I can't find a profile folder.

Go to the help menu (alt+H) \Click on Troubleshooting information. Click on the show folder button.

Although what your going to do there with this sort of a problem I have no idea.
