why does my new bookmark folder keep disappearing?

I'm new to Firefox and have twice added a new folder to my bookmarks list and have then added urls to it. The laptop has then been turned off and when I come back on both the folder and the saved urls have vanished. I've added the folder in Bookmarks -> Show all bookmarks. I'm using firefox 4.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
